Frequently Asked Questions

General/Getting Started

What is the difference between a CPA, an accountant and a bookkeeper?

CPAs become licensed by passing a rigorous four-part exam after completing the required higher education degree program prescribed by a state and/or the requirement to practice under the supervision of another licensed CPA for a period of time. Ongoing licensure is contingent upon completing mandatory Continuing Professional Education in a defined period of time, including Ethics courses, and remaining in good standing with state and federal regulatory bodies.

CPAs are considered the “gold standard” when it comes to providing attest, advisory and tax services. Accountants and bookkeepers do not have mandatory education or licensing regulations, but they often have advanced  and/or specialized training to prepare them for their respective careers. Accountants and bookkeepers often work closely with CPAs to serve clients in a coordinated, efficient manner.

At Tronconi Segarra & Associates, our accountants and bookkeepers are required to take the same type of Continuing Professional Education that our CPAs also take, even though they are not required to do so, giving our clients a highly experienced and knowledgeable team to work with.
